Microsoft SkyDrive to get ODF support, Twitter sharing

Microsoft's cloud storage option to gain features

Microsoft's SkyDrive cloud storage service is getting an update today, with features expected to increase the usability of the service. The new features expand the range of formats supported on SkyDrive, while making file sharing easier.

Today's update will make available some long-rumored options, including bringing Open Document Format (ODF) support to the service, which will allow SkyDrive to handle the XML-based file format supported across a range of word processing apps. The update also brings the ability to upload 300MB files in the browser. Also, SkyDrive users will now be able to share files to Twitter from the SkyDrive web interface, with the system automatically shortening URLs to Microsoft's sdrv.ms domain instead of the usual, lengthy SkyDrive address.

The cloud storage sector, previously the domain of smaller providers, has seen increased competition as larger tech players have entered the fray. In addition to SkyDrive, there is also Apple's iCloud option, as well as Amazon's Cloud Drive. Meanwhile, Google is rumored to be nearing a release for its own Google Drive cloud service.
