Mystery product appears to be branded headphones
Barnes & Noble's rumored expansion into audio products appears to be reality, as an image of an as yet unannounced product has surfaced on the company's home page. The image shows a set of sleek, gray, Nook-branded headphones.
Previous speculation over the mystery product centered on the possibility of Barnes & Noble introducing an audio dock, MP3 player, or an update to its line of Nook tablets. The Barnes & Noble site for the product, initially posted without an image on April 1, was updated today to show only a product name, Nook Audio, and an image of the headphones.
The move into audio embodies the retailer's evolving relationship with content. Once dedicated largely to reading, Barnes & Noble has, since the introduction of its Nook Color, moved more into apps, video, and now apparently audio. It remains to be seen what exactly the capabilities of the headphones will be and whether they will be introduced in conjunction with some larger partnership with any other content providers.
