Windows Server 2012 official, due this year

Microsoft at its Management Summit in Las Vegas on Tuesday introduced the latest version of its system management environment, System Center 2012. Microsoft Corporate VP Brad Anderson said the new software would let system administrators launch a private cloud infrastructure in about 30 seconds. It will offer two console views: one for the infrastructure management side, or service providers, and another for app management, or for service customers.

The provider side will allow for automating the provisioning of hardware, making and managing pools of storage resources, and more.

The app management lets admins view deployed application service and available cloud resources for more deployments. It automates roll-out from pre-production to full production based on service template and wizards. App availability and performance monitoring are also part of it.

System Center 2012 is made from the ground up to be cross-platform compatible, with support for VMware and Citrix Xen servers.

Also unveiled at the show was that the next version of Windows Server will be out later this year and be called, appropriately, Windows Server 2012. Previously known as Windows Server 8, the software contains features that Anderson the most ambitious from the company in its history. Hyper-V virtual machine threading was demonstrated running on 32 virtual processors and 120GB of allocated memory.

The software was promised to support up to 1TB of memory per virtual machine with the same licensing cost as any other virtual workload. Hyper V will support up to 64TB of virtual disk. [via Ars Technica]
