Cablevision launches Optimum app for Macs, PCs

Cablevision, which makes the Optimum iPad app that lets users watch live TV when on their home network, has now launched the Optimum App for Laptop. As the name suggests, the app lets Cablevision TV subscribers watch live TV on any Windows PC or Mac connected to their wireless network, though it does not support VOD as the iOS version does.

Access to all the channels on a user's cable package is available through the app, as well as the enhanced guide. Also included in the laptop version is a Most Watched feature, which informs users of what the top shows other Cablevision customers are watching. The quality isn't quite HD, with pixelation said to be an issue during action scenes. Carried over from the iOS app is the ability to schedule DVR shows and connecting to other Optimum TVs in the house.

The software uses Microsoft's Silverlight tech for a secure stream. The same method is used in the Xfinity Xbox 360 app.
