Facebook increase patent library to fight lawsuits

Facebook is set to buy a large number of patents that Microsoft recently acquired acquire through an AOL auction. The deal, worth $550 million, lets Facebook own 650 AOL patents and patent applications, along with a license to the remainder that Microsoft retains.

The deal would leave Microsoft holding 275 AOL patents, a license for the 300 patents that AOL did not sell in the auction, and a license for the 650 Facebook will own. Microsoft originally paid $1.06 billion for the patent collection.

Facebook was rumored to have bought 750 patents from IBM last month, prompted by the Yahoo lawsuit against the social network, and is said to be in the process of building a sufficient patent library to avoid similar litigation efforts.
