Amazon releases Send to Kindle for Mac

updated 07:20 pm EDT, Tue April 24, 2012

App adds three ways to easily transmit docs

Expanding the Send to Kindle line started by Send to Kindle for PC, Amazon today unveiled Send to Kindle for Mac. Send to Kindle for Mac is a lightweight application occupying 18.5MB of hard drive space. A user drops supported documents on the dock item to automatically send them over Whispernet or WiFi to a registered Kindle device or iOS application.

A contextual menu item is also added to the Finder, allowing a control click and menu selection to send a selected file. Other applications have a "send to Kindle" button added to the print dialog box.

Send to Kindle for Mac (and PC) is available now for free download. Send to Kindle for Mac requires a Macintosh with an Intel processor, 512MB of RAM, 100MB of available disk space, and OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or 10.7 Lion. The app is available immediately.

    Lightweight?

Since when did 18.5MB become "lightweight"?

600K is lightweight. 18.5MB is quite large for such a simple app. There's nothing remotely lightweight about it.

    Group sharing version

It's a great app and much handier than emailing. But just sending to your own account isn't enough for some. Amazon now needs to create a group sharing version that lets teams exchange documents for review. We can already do that via email. This would be simpler.

    Re: Lightweight

Who says it's a simple app? Simplicity is how it interacts with the user, not in what is done underneath.

And with all the resources, language files, and who knows what else app makers shove into their bundles, 18MB is lightweight. At least for a Mac app.
