Nook GlowLight ships to those who pre-ordered

Barnes & Noble is already shipping its Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight, or weeks ahead of the originally-promised schedule. Those who have pre-ordered the device will get it this week, with shipments continuing through to the end of the month. Store stock won't arrive until early in May, however, and it will be limited, B&N warned.

The latest e-book reader is the first to combine e-paper with edge lighting to illuminate the screen without the need for any external light sources. Battery life with the screen light on regularly is said to be one month, while it is said to last two months with it off.

It otherwise shares the 2GB of built-in battery with the original Nook and adds a microSDHC memory card slot. The six-inch screen uses a rapid page turn technique that only wipes the whole page periodically rather than at every refresh.

The GlowLight Nook is priced at $139.
