Best Buy to shut down Connect business on June 1
Best Buy Connect, the branded mobile 3G and 4G data service that went live in June of 2010 is now being discontinued, Engadget learned. A leaked memo indicates that new activations will no longer be accepted, effective immediately. Current customers will see their service end on June 1.
To appease these users, Best Buy will cancel any Early Termination Fees and give them a free $125 or $150 gift card to help offset the cost of switching to another network. Those one the WiMAX Connect 4G service will have the option to move over to Clear, which already supplies the network.
As to why, Best Buy only said that it will look at other ways to grow mobile broadband support. The official news is expected to come from the retailer soon.
