Amazon settles Texas dispute, agrees to collect sales tax

updated 06:20 pm EDT, Fri April 27, 2012

Amazon creating 2500 Texas jobs in next four years

Amazon has settled a dispute with the state of Texas over $269 million in unpaid sales taxes between 2005 and 2009. The settlement terms require the company to create jobs in the state and collect sales tax beginning in July.

Job creation is set to take place over the next four years, creating at least 2,500 jobs and make at least $200 million in capital investments in the state. This announcement takes place a year after the closure of the Irving distribution center, opened in 2005.

An Amazon SEC filing mentions that the job creation and sales tax collection resolves all existing tax issues up until July. There is also mention of “an immaterial payment to the state,” the value of which is unknown.

Amazon and other retailers continue to feel pressure from authorities over sales taxes, including proposed legislation to require tax collection for online sales across state lines.
