Makeover yields minimalist results page

Microsoft has rolled out a redesign of the search results page for its Bing search engine. Users will now find a less-cluttered results page, bordering on minimalist and dominated by open space.

The initial landing page for the search engine remains the same, with a picturesque background surrounding the search bar; but the results page has moved the Related Searches, Search History, and other search tools from the left side of the screen to the right side, below any ads related to a search term. Social network options, including notifications of friends who may have liked a particular result, are now minimized and appear in an icon to the left of individual results. The search results also have more white space between them, in order to increase ease of reading.

The redesign comes as Microsoft continues to struggle to grow market share for its search engine, which remains in the shadow of Google. Recent reports revealed that Microsoft may at one time have tried to sell Bing to Facebook during negotiations between the two companies over a year ago. In lieu of that sale, Microsoft has opted to increase integration between the social network and Bing, as the search engine now features a Sign in option wherein a user can link a Facebook account to a Bing profile.
