Samsung Galaxy S III preorders commence in UK

updated 05:59 pm EDT, Fri May 4, 2012

Carriers: O2, Orange, Vodaphone, T-Mobile, Three

The brand new Samsung Galaxy S III is now available for pre-order in the UK, just one day after the device was unveiled at a special event in London. Five carriers have started orders, with an expected availability date of May 30.

The Galaxy S III is available on a subsidized plan, or unlocked. Retailer Carphone Warehouse has the unlocked handset for £500 ($807 USD). Competitor Clove is asking £550 ($888 USD). Both chains allow free preorders for the phone if a consumer signs up for a two year agreement starting at £36 ($58) per month.

Put side by side, the Galaxy S III is noticeably bigger than its predecessor, the S II. The 4.8-inch screen makes the newer handset about half an inch longer than its 4.3-inch sibling, albeit with rounder corners. The thickness isn't greatly increased, only by 0.1mm to 8.6mm. The S III boasts a quad core ARMv7 processor, and a HD AMOLED display running at 1280x720.

The UK launch will be followed by shipments to other markets, with US availability expected sometime in June.
