Archos Child Pad 2 to feature capacitive screen

updated 07:10 pm EDT, Wed May 9, 2012

Kid-oriented tablet otherwise similar

Earlier this year, Archos confirmed the release of its Child Pad, a child-oriented, seven-inch tablet that undercut Amazon's Kindle Fire by $70. The low price was possible due in part to the tablet's utilization of resistive touchscreen technology in its display. Now, an Archos product roadmap seems to confirm the existence of a new version, the Child Pad 2, implementing a capacitive touchscreen but still likely retailing at a low price.

With the exception of the capacitive touchscreen, the Child Pad 2 will be nearly identical to its predecessor, running Android 4.0 with a 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and access to the Kids App Store, a subset of the AppsLib store, which features about 10,000 titles. The tablet will also feature parental controls, allowing parents to block some sites on the Internet.

The Child Pad 2 is expected to launch for about $129, though Archos has yet to reveal any specifics with regard to launch window and availability. Other budget tablets have approached or reached this low price point in the past, but none have approached the Kindle Fire's relative success to date. [via Notebook Italia and Tablets Magazine]
