Galaxy S III places near top in two of three tests

The crew over at GSMarena have got their hands on Samsung's Galaxy S III smartphone and tested its battery performance. They came away impressed, comparing it to the performance of 31 other handsets in the process. The 2,100mAh battery managed to provide 10 hours and 20 minutes of 3G talk time on a single charge, placing fourth and behind the Motorola Droid Razr MAXX and Samsung's own Galaxy Note and Wave 3 S8600, in that order.

Just behind, at 10 hours flat, was HTC's One V. The 3.8-inch Super AMOLED screen was off for this measurement, however, helping it in its placement.

With that screen on, for the web browsing test, the phone fared worse, placing 14th in the lineup, at 5 hours and 17 minutes. In comparison, the HTC Sensation XL was just above it, at 5 hours, 20 minutes, while the Razr MAXX again topped the list, with a 7 hour, 23 minute performance. This test requires that an automated script reloads every ten seconds. The pages don't contain any Flash elements and the screen brightness is set at 50 percent. A Wi-Fi signal from a Wireless N router placed close-by provides the web connection.

In the video playback test, however, the screen didn't prove to be much of a hindrance, as the phone managed to place second, at 10 hours and 1 minute, with only the MAXX above it at 14 hours, 17 minutes. Third was the Samsung Rugby Smart I847, with a 9-hour, 34-minute posting. The test was stopped at 10 percent of battery life remaining, as most smartphones shut off the video player at this level. The handsets were put into Airplane mode for this test and the displays are at 50 percent of their maximum brightness. An SD video is looped for the duration of the test.

Finally, the standby endurance test returned a 43-hour performance. This included one hour of 3G talk, video playback, and web browsing per day. The performance of the other handsets weren't available for comparison, however.
