LG, Sharp, Japan Display again named as builders

Sources for Reuters are supporting Wall Street Journal claims that Apple is using 4-inch displays for the next iPhone, and has already begun to place orders for the new parts. As with the earlier report, Reuters says that LG Display, Sharp, and Japan Display are handling production, which is allegedly in early stages; full production orders could begin in June. iPhone assembly could start as soon as August, if Apple follows normal patterns. One source comments that it's still uncertain what share of display production each supplier will have.

Apple has so far stuck with 3.5-inch screens for iPhones since the launch of the first model in 2007. Increasingly, though, many rival smartphones are using screens measuring 4 inches or larger, even as much as 4.8 inches in the case of Samsung's Galaxy Note. While such sizes can potentially make a phone difficult to fit in a pocket, the iPhone may now seem inadequate by comparison.

Few new features of the 2012 iPhone have leaked, but Apple is at least expected to introduce LTE, mirroring the third-generation iPad's features. Apple will also likely upgrade processing power, RAM, and onboard cameras.
