Apple wins rights to iphone5.com

Site not necessarily related to next-gen iPhone name

Apple has managed to win the contested rights to iphone5.com, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization website. The case has been updated to "Terminated," and visiting iphone5.com currently displays a blank page, rather than a forum that used to be in place. Apple applied to take control of the domain earlier this month, hoping to wrest it away from a protection agency identified as the Corporation Service Company.

The timing is such that Apple could want the address in advance of a next-generation iPhone with the same name. Alternately, though, Apple may simply want control to reduce confusion and/or drive more traffic to its own website. Companies and individuals will regularly squat on Apple-related domain names, often to pull in their own traffic for the sake of advertising revenue.
