More regional carriers debut iPhone 4S

updated 07:30 pm EDT, Fri May 18, 2012

Oklahoma, Puerto Rico latest additions

Continuing with a string of recent arrivals on US regional carriers, the iPhone has arrived to two news that cover northwest Oklahoma and Puerto Rico, respectively. Open Mobile, the Puerto Rico carrier, may be the first exclusively no-contract carrier in the US to offer iPhones. Oklahoma-based Pioneer Cellular is carrying only the iPhone 4S, while Open Mobile has both the 4 and 4S at various capacities.

The Pioneer Mobile site hasn't been fully updated with pricing and relevant sales data for the iPhone 4S, instead directing customers to a generic channel partners page that lists the features and some of the selling points of the iPhone 4S. The company is expected to sell iPhone 4S models at the standard rates of $199 and up with a two-year contract. It began its rollout today and will expand to all its stores over the next month.

Open Mobile offers customers one of two options on four models of iPhone: outright sales and an "Open Plan" with a non-refundable deposit and a pre-paid $70 per month unlimited plan. Open offers the 8GB iPhone 4 for $335, or $285 if the customer is switching from another carrier. The 16GB iPhone 4S is $435 (or $335 for switchers), while the 32GB iPhone 4S costs $535 or $435 for switchers.

The 64GB model is $100 higher in both cases. The $70 per month pre-paid Open Plan includes unlimited minutes and texting, along with unlimited data (in Puerto Rico only) and up to 250MB of roaming data when in the United States. The commonwealth of Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the US, and though not a state is considered a part of the country while still retaining a degree of separation.

Several regional and small carriers have recently added the iPhone over the last two months, including carriers in California, Kansas, Kentucky, Alaska, Virginia, Wisconsin and much of the US southeast
