Sony Tablet S, Tablet P to get Android 4.0
Sony has confirmed to CNet that Sony tablet owners in all regions will receive an over-the-air update to Android 4.0 by the end of May. Sony had previously announced the coming availability of Android 4.0 for all of its tablet models, though the company had not announced a specific timeline until now.
In the US, Sony's Tablet S was upgraded to Android 4.0 in April, but users in Europe, Japan, and elsewhere have been stuck on Android 3.2.1. For the Tablet S, the update brought a panoramic camera mode, an updated gallery viewer with SD card access, and browser enhancements. The Sony Tablet S and Tablet P will get the update by the 24th of May.
For many owners, the lack of certainty about updates to the latest versions of Android, along with tendency of manufacturers to not offer upgrades or (as here) to roll out upgrades to different regions on different timetables, has been a drawback of Android tablets. By comparison, Apple issues single worldwide upgrades for its tablets, and thus far has not excluded any versions of the iPad from updates (though at some point the 2010 original iPad will likely be left behind, as it was discontinued in 2011 with the release of the iPad 2).
