Promises interruption-free transfers

TiVo has announced early details of a new service, TiVo Stream. The platform will allow owners of Premiere or Premiere Q DVRs to access content on an iPhone or iPad. More importantly however, people will be able to stream or download shows to multiple devices simultaneously without interrupting playback on a TV. Users should in fact be able to "quickly transfer shows to their mobile device for viewing outside the home," though few other details have been made public.

The company is promising to "release both products at retail and through select cable operators," but has not set any kind of launch window. More information is due to be released in the coming months.

Even less is known about a new "IP set-top box," announced simultaneously. That hardware should push content to secondary TVs, but lacks a name or any other information.

    Innovative...in 2002

Wow, this would be pretty innovative for TiVo, in the year 2002. It sounds like you can stream over WiFi, but you'll need to copy to your device if you want to take your content on the road? As I write this comment I'm in the middle of a 2-week business trip, and am looking forward to watching my TiVo-recorded copies of French Open broadcasts. But if it doesn't stream, it's a non-starter. Plus if it only works with Premier or newer, that rules me out, as I have a TiVo HD and am not ready to upgrade, especially to something that doesn't do what I need.

Fortunately I bought a Vulkano a couple of years ago, and now I can stream my TiVo-recorded content over WiFi anytime I want. I love my TiVo, but I gave up on the company being innovative years ago. This announcement does nothing to change my mind.
