OmniVision outs two 16MP, 4K-recordable camera sensors

16MP sensor potentially usable in future iOS devices

OmniVision has unveilled two high-resolution sensors for smartphones. The OV16820 and OV16825 sensors designed for smartphones offer 4K resolution video capabilities and 16-megapixel burst photography. OmniVision's history with Apple as a camera sensor supplier could lead to a future iPad or iPhone with 4K video recording capabilities.

Both of the new Omnivision sensors are capable of recording at a full resolution of 4608x3456 at 30fps, or 4K2K (3840x2160) and 60fps at lower resolutions with the extra pixels used for electronic image stabilization. The sensors are expected to enter volume production before the end of the year.

Mention of the “high-end smartphone market” and “flagship smartphones," coupled with Omnivision supplying the 5-megapixel sensor in the iPhone 4 and the new iPad leads to the possibility of future Apple devices potentially including the sensor, or something similar, in future iOS devices.
