ZTE teases new 'World's Thinnest Smartphone'

'Athena' to beat out slim handsets at just 6.2mm

Chinese manufacturer ZTE may be preparing to snatch the title of "World's Thinnest Smartphone" from Oppo, which just recently released its 6.65mm-thick Finder. Leaked pictures have emerged showing off a ZTE smartphone, codenamed "Athena," that appears to be just 6.2mm thick. A few details have emerged with the images, indicating that the slim model may pack some processing power within its frame.

Athena, pictured in a black kevlar edition in the leaked photos, will be available in an array of color options. The phone is rumored to sport a 1280x720 display, as well as a multi-core Cortex-A15 processor and 64GB of internal storage. The phone is expected to run Android 4.0, but likely with the Miflavor UI seen previously on the ZTE Era.

Pricing and availability are as yet unknown, as with the handset's actual name. The slim handset could prove attractive to consumers, which would prove a boon for ZTE. The company has previously expressed a desire to join Apple and Samsung atop the high-end smartphone market, but has seen its brand suffer of late thanks to security issues and run-ins with regulatory organizations over improper trade allegations and alleged embargo violations.
