RunCore takes RFID-secured external drive to Computex 2012

Storage device maker RunCore is debuting new solid-state drives at Computex 2012 in Taipei. Introductions include replacements for MacBook Air factory-fitted SSDs, a single-chip SSD with data self-destruction capabilities, and an external drive with a hidden partition protected by RFID keys.

The Rocket Air SSDs are half-thickness drives aimed towards thin laptops such as ultrabooks and the MacBook Air. Compatible with mid-2011 MacBook Airs, the drives use SATA III and Tier 1 Toggle Synchronous NAND technology to offer claimed data transfer rates of over 500MB per second.

RunCore's Mini DOM SSD is said to be the world's first single-chip "disk on module," with capacities between 8GB and 64GB and a temperature tolerance from -40 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit. An “intelligent destruction” button on the drive lets the unit wipe any stored data in an emergency.

The Xapear SSD is an external drive with RFID protection. Two partitions can be created, with the second only being visible when an RFID key is swiped over the unit. A second swipe will hide the partition again, leaving only the publically viewable section on the USB 2.0 drive. Remote data destruction is also possible via an integrated GSM receiver, which will overwrite data upon receiving an SMS message, and will send a confirmation back once everything has been wiped.

RunCore has yet to announce pricing information or launch dates for the new products.
