Microsoft grabs domains related to rumored Xbox 360 peripheral
Fusible is reporting that Microsoft has been buying up domains related to the name "Smart Glass" ahead of the expected unveiling of its cross-platform technology at this year's Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3). The domain buys seem to confirm that Microsoft will be revealing some major addition to the Xbox 360, though the exact nature of the Smart Glass project is as yet unknown.
On the same day that news of the forthcoming feature broke, Microsoft registered microsoftsmartglass.net, microsoftsmartglass.biz, xboxsmartglass.org, xboxsmartglass.net, and a number of other domains. An unidentified resident of China, however, managed to register xboxsmartglass.com before Microsoft could purchase the domain. Currently, the domains under Microsoft's control redirect visitors to the company's Bing search engine.
Previous reports have pegged Smart Glass as either a hardware tablet peripheral or, perhaps more likely, an app allowing users to interact with an Xbox 360 through the smartphones or tablets they already own. The technology, should it prove to be an app, is expected to work across Windows Phone, Android, and iOS.
