Honeywld's Google TV gets AirPlay-like media streaming

updated 01:41 pm EDT, Wed June 6, 2012

First Android 4.0-based Google TV box shows up at Computex

An ARM chip-based Google TV box from Taiwan's Honeywld Technology running on Android 4.0 has the ability to stream media files from portable Android 4.0 devices. In this regard, it's similar to Apple's AirPlay technology that can stream videos and music from iPhones and iPads through the Apple TV to HDTVs. What's more, the box will have the ability to synchronize photos, IDG reported from the Computex trade show in Taipei.

An accompanying application will need to be installed on the source device, however, and it's still under development. The small company, which has less than 40 employees, doesn't have the resources to launch the Power Zest Android 4.0 Smart TV Player in markets other than Taiwan. As such, it is looking for other companies to brand the box under their own name. A Taiwan release is due for July, though pricing hasn't been revealed. A company representative believes it would fall somewhere between $95 and $120, however.

Specs include a dual-core Marvell ARM Cortex A9 at its core and runs a customized version of Android 4.0. There is also 4GB of storage space, 1GB of RAM, and a microSD memory card slot. Wi-Fi will be optional, but connections include Ethernet and HDMI. Users get a small video player icon, web browser shortcut, and links to Picasa and YouTube.

The company said Android 4.0-based Google TV products from other manufacturers that are likely to include LG, Samsung, Sony, and Vizio will arrive during the summer.
