Study: smartphones barely used for calls

updated 12:47 am EDT, Sun July 1, 2012

Internet, social, music, games all rank ahead

Smartphones may be the most popular phones being sold today, but making calls seems to be far down the list when it comes to what people are using them for. This according to a new study taking a look at the main uses for the handheld devices. The Telegraph reports that making calls doesn't even rank in the top three activities users perform with their handhelds.

Mobile network O2 conducted a survey and found that the average smartphone owner uses her device for more than two hours per day. Web browsing ranks first among smartphone activities, occupying about 25 minutes of users' time. Next come social media, music, and games, with 17.5, 15.5, and 14.5 minutes devoted, respectively. Actual phone calls rank fifth at about 12 minutes per day.

Rounding out the top ten, in order, are emails, texting, TV and film, books, and camera activities. Fifty-four percent of survey respondents said they use their smartphones as an alarm clock, and nearly half said their smartphones had replaced their watches. The survey also found that average call length has dropped 50 percent since 2005, with users spending about 90 seconds on the phone per call.
