Sources back 7.85-inch iPad using Sharp IGZO panel

Analysts stick to $249-299 pricetag

Apple is indeed working on a 7.85-inch model of the iPad, using IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) panels made by Sharp, according to anonymous industry sources. While both claims have been made before, rumors about a smaller iPad have largely quieted in recent weeks. IGZO allows for better images from a thinner screen, with pixel densities potentially extending up to 330ppi, which could put a mini iPad into Retina territory.

When a smaller iPad might show up remains unclear. Some reports have called for a launch later this year, presumably around the same time Apple introduces a sixth-generation iPhone. Pricing has been rumored as falling between $249 and $299. That would make the tablet more expensive than rivals like the Kindle Fire or Nexus 7, but still cheaper than an iPad 2, and better off in terms of display quality.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't see this alleged device as an iPad. The amount of, um, stuff Apple would catch for violating Steve's corpse would be insane. I could definitely see a device like that as a dedicated iTunes Store and Apple TV device though -- an e-reader on steroids -- or maybe as a "kid's iPad" maybe.

Hmmm. Maybe they'll get around the "Steve says 7-inch BAD" thing by calling it an iPod Touch Deluxe. Heh.

    Kids iPad, makes sense.

For the middle and upper classes a "kid" sized iPad has been something to wait for. It's a great fit for the aged 5-14 demo. I hope they do release it. Of course adults will find the size useful too. I LOVE my iPad(3rd gen) but I also love the better portability of my Fire.

I wonder how long this bogus will still running, Apple already has a 250$ mini-tablet it's called the iPod touch. Beside you can't shrink the iPad display without breaking apps usability.

    Re: Nah

Well, based on that theory, if Steve had died 5 years sooner, Apple would not be allowed to sell an iPhone, because he dissed that too, up to Apple had one.

And who would be giving Apple grief? I didn't realize that anything that Steve mandated was written in stone and should never happen. Is that why they'll now never fix the Finder? Because it sucked under Jobs' watch, it should now always suck?
