Google Mini, Symbian Search app among casualties

Google is shutting down Google Video, iGoogle, and a number of other less-popular services as the company undergoes a period of "spring cleaning." The product discontinuations are part of a process that has seen the search giant shuttering or combining more than 30 services since last fall. In a post on the Official Google Blog, the company detailed the shutdown reasoning and schedule for five products.

Enterprise Search product Google Mini was introduced in 2005, but will be discontinued at the end of July. Google believes the product's functionality is better achieved by Google Search Appliance, Google Site Search, and Google Commerce Search.

Google Talk Chatback is being discontinued. The company claims the product is outdated. Websites using the product are encouraged to use the Meebo bar, part of Meebo, which was acquired by Google recently.

Google Video hasn't been accepting uploads since May of 2009, and the company will begin migrating videos to YouTube starting later this summer. Users will have until August 20 to migrate, delete, or download all of their video content before Google automatically moves it to YouTube. Videos migrated by Google will be listed as private and available for access through the YouTube video manager.

On November 1, 2013, Google will shut down iGoogle. The company says that the proliferation of web and mobile apps makes the service obsolete. Users are encouraged to adjust or export their data over the next 16 months.

Finally, the Symbian Search App will be discontinued soon. Google encourages users of the app to go to the Google homepage in order to take advantage of greater capabilities than currently possible on the now-defunct platform.
