Phones to surpass PCs for Internet access in China

updated 06:45 pm EDT, Tue July 3, 2012

In two to three years, mobile Internet to dominate

The next few years will likely see mobile phones becoming the dominant means of Internet access for Chinese residents. This according to experts at a conference organized by the Beijing Communication Industry Association. As China Daily reports, the prediction underscores the importance of the mobile sector for companies looking to make an impact in the country with the largest number of Internet users in the world.

At the end of 2011, China had 513 million Internet users. Of those, 356 million can access the Internet using a mobile phone. That figure represents an increase of 17.5 percent over 2010.

Two or three years will see cell phones become the device of choice for a majority of Chinese Internet users, who find the diversity of apps and cheaper access more attractive than the PC platform. Chinese users are increasingly relying on their cell phones to make bill payments, shop, and book tickets.

Last year, China accounted for 11 percent of the world's total mobile app downloads, second only to the United States. The country has already become the largest smartphone market in the world, surpassing the US late last year. Currently, Samsung holds the top spot among smartphone makers for Chinese market share.
