Nvidia's Kai platform coming to smartphones this year

updated 02:05 pm EDT, Thu July 5, 2012

Low-cost quad-core Tegra 3 handsets soon to arrive

The chipset underlying Google's Nexus 7 and other forthcoming 7-inch tablets may also be making its way to smartphones in the near future. According to MyDrivers.com, Nvidia's Kai platform which enables quad-core mobile computing at a lower price point, will be appearing in smartphones produced by Chinese handset makers before the end of this year.

The Kai platform makes Nvidia's quad-core Tegra 3 chipset compatible with lower-cost memory and display components, allowing for tablets to reach much lower price points without sacrificing processing power. The Nexus 7, for instance, features a quad-core processor that can shovel of processor work to its 12-core graphics chip, ensuring smooth operation.

Chinese manufacturer ZTE already showed off a quad-core Tegra 3 smartphone in February of this year. That phone has yet to be launched internationally, though it could be indicative of the sort of handset Nvidia imagines rolling out with its partners over the next few months. [via Unwired View]
