Verizon drops patent from TiVo case

Case now down to one patent claim
Verizon's complaint in its ongoing patent case against TiVo has been whittled down to only one patent. This comes after the telecom company dropped another of the six patent claims initially filed in the complaint. As Reuters reports, the telecom company regards the dismissal as a procedural matter that doesn't affect the substance of its case.
The case involves reciprocal allegations of patent infringement from Verizon and TiVo. The patents at question involve technologies related to video-recording. Verizon has dismissed or had dismissed five of its six initial claims; TiVo has dismissed none.
Observers claim that this latest news represents a small victory for TiVo, as the DVR company retains claim to all of its initial complaints. Over the past several months, TiVo has had a run of good fortune in the litigation sphere, even as other companies duplicate or make obsolete the video recording service that forms the company's foundation. In March, Microsoft quietly dropped a patent lawsuit alleging TiVo violated its video purchasing and delivery patents. In January, TiVo secured a $215 million settlement and licensing agreement from AT&T over DVR patents.
