Unnamed sources expand on previous rumor reports

The rumor that Amazon is working on a smartphone has been corroborated by a Wall Street Journal report. Unnamed part suppliers for the online retailer claim to have narrowed the screen size to between four and five inches diagonally, adding to details from previous leaks.

A screen size of less than five inches would bring an Amazon device into the same territory as other popular handsets, with the Samsung Galaxy S III having a 4.8-inch screen and the iPhone 4S sporting a 3.5-inche panel. Although separate reports point to a tablet, Amazon's recent wireless patent-portfolio purchase, acquisition of 3D mapping startup UpNext, and the existing Amazon Appstore add credibility to the smartphone rumors.

Amazon is said to be revising its Kindle Fire, and adding a 10-inch variant to its tablet range.
