Business Development director now directs Amazon Appstore
Microsoft's Senior Director of Windows Phone Business Development has left the software giant for online retailer Amazon. Windows Gadget News discovered yesterday that Williams' LinkedIn account lists his current position as Director of Amazon's Appstore. The move lends credence to persistent rumors that Amazon is working to develop its own smartphone for release later this year.
Williams had been with Microsoft since 1999, when he signed on to direct business development for tablet, mobile, laptop, and ultramobile PCs. For the last four years, he had been heading up business development in the Windows Phone division. He is the second Windows Phone executive to depart Microsoft for Amazon this year, after Brandon Watson -- former head of Windows Phone Developer Experience -- made the switch in February.
Amazon is widely suspected to be preparing to release its own smartphone, and the addition of executives with experience in that sector would likely help ensure a smoother launch. Recent moves by the online retailer -- such as purchasing a 3D mapping company -- have only strengthened rumors of an impending smartphone launch, and these recent personnel acquisitions will likely do the same.
