Avanti punts pay-as-you-go broadband service to Europe

Prepaid Satellite Internet aimed at travellers, rural locations

Satellite operator Avanti Communications has started a pay-as-you-go satellite broadband service in Europe. The wholesale connection provider will now allow its service partners to sell the high-bandwidth Ka-band service to their customers based on bandwidth usage instead of a recurring monthly subscription. The aim of the new pricing scheme is to attract those who see satellite broadband as too expensive for their needs, especially those in remote locations or frequently travelling.

Although the service will continue catering to partners offering 12- to 24-month contracts, the prepaid option will let end users go online with a 4Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream anywhere on the continent, payable in 1GB packages. Management at Avanti also intends to avoid any form of traffic management at present, although the same cannot be said about its resellers, which may have the final word on the subject.

Avanti will use the HYLAS1 satellite, which it put into orbit in 2010, for the service. HYLAS2, due to be launched on August 2, will extend Avanti's coverage to Africa and the Middle East, with a third satellite called HYLAS3 due in 2015 for expanded coverage in Africa. Current clients of Avanti include BT, which has spent over 132 million ($204 million) to introduce broadband to remote areas of the UK. [via Tech Week Europe]
