'Entire' iOS lineup to get new dock format as soon as Sept.

updated 03:13 pm EDT, Mon August 6, 2012

May include slightly modified third-gen iPad

Apple is planning to update the "entire" iOS device lineup to use its new dock connector format, possibly in one shot at its September 12th event, say sources for iMore. The sources are the same who leaked some of the first information about the format in February. Specifically Apple is said to be planning new iPhone, iPod nano, and iPod touch models, as well as the rumored "mini" iPad, and an updated 9.7-inch iPad.

While releasing so many new or updated products at once would be unprecedented for Apple, it could be necessary to encourage adoption of the new connector format, both by people buying Apple products and companies making accessories. Without the same port style across devices, Apple and accessory makers would have to continue spending resources supporting a format with a fixed shelf life, and products that previously supported multiple devices might prove incompatible.

Why not a pox on the old one?

    Indeed.

The old one and its three power incarnations (Firewire-charging, USB-charging w/o handshake, USB-charging WITH handshake), none of which can be discerned except by accessories not working.

Not to mention devices supporting radio, not supporting radio, finally supporting analog inputs, no longer supporting analog inputs, supporting video out, no longer supporting video out except above certain resolutions or below certain resolutions, only supporting video output with newly designed accessories containing verification chipsets...

It started to get really fun at some point.

Luckily, AirPlay happened and took over some of the more bizarre sidelines.
