App constructed in collaboration with Adobe
Apple's iPhone will be getting a version of the The New Yorker app specifically designed for use on a smartphone. The app was constructed in collaboration with Adobe, using that company's Digital Publishing Suite to bring all The New Yorker's digital elements to bear on the iPhone screen. The app is now available as a free download in Apple's iTunes App Store.
The magazine was previously available in its own app specially designed for the iPad, but this update allows the iPhone to receive an optimized version of the publication. It includes audio, video, and slideshow features like those seen on the iPad. The app is structured in such a way that its content is broken into hierarchies, with section headings allowing readers to drill down into topics.
The app is available as a free download. That download gets users the August 13 and 20, 2012, issue. To read more, users can subscribe to the magazine or buy issues individually. Current subscribers can download the app and, through a series of prompts, tie their physical subscription to the app, which will grant them access to every issue since 1925.
