Sony's A99 said to target Canon's 5D Mark II, 5D Mark III DSLRs

With its upcoming Alpha 99 DSLR, Sony will aim to specifically outperform Canon's 5D Mark II and 5D Mark III, Sony Alpha Rumors learned from its sources. The feedback Sony gathered from professional photographers indicated they wanted pro video quality and support so that's the two areas it aims to better Canon's shooters. A support system will also be developed for the camera, the source said.

It will also have significantly better performance than Sony's own A77, with faster A/F speeds, better video quality, and a fast and high resolution EVF. The accessories will also be carefully considered to cater to pros, with a new hotshoe and Flash Light with a continuous LED light for both photos and videos. The image quality is also being described as clean.

The source is guessing this could become the first Full Frame hybrid camera equally at home whether capturing stills or moving images.

As for tech specs, the A99 was earlier rumored to get a 102-point cross-point autofocus system, a first in the industry. Otherwise, it may sport a 24-megapixel sensor and an ISO range of 100-25,600.

Finally, the source hinted that a photo-focused full-frame camera that may be based on the A99 will arrive sometime in 2013.
