Barnes & Noble reacts to Kindle Fire rumor-mill

Barnes & Noble has slashed the prices of its Nook e-reader and tablet devices ahead of mounting speculation that Amazon is soon to introduce an all-new Kindle Fire, reports Reuters. A Nook tablet with 16GB of storage has been cut from $249 to $199, while the 8GB model gets trimmed $20 down to $179. The Nook Color has also had a price cut, taking it from $169 to $149.

Although Barnes & Noble claims to have a 27 percent share of the US e-book sales, the success of Amazon's Kindle e-readers and the Kindle Fire tablet have forced it into sharpening the prices on its Nook lineup. So much so, that its most recent earnings were directly affected by the aggressive, and unexpected, pricing of Amazon's Kindle Fire when it launched at $199. Since then, Google has also launched its Nexus 7, which also starts at $199.

The next Kindle Fire is expected to pack a 1200x600 IPS display, which will boost its pixel density by 67 percent. A further rumor suggests that Amazon may also have a larger, 8.9-inch model in the works with a 1920x800 pixel display. As before, the next Kindle Fire is expected to run on its heavily customized Android OS that is heavily geared towards Amazon's content offerings.
