AT&T source calls for late-September iPhone launch

Carrier locking in worker schedules through mid-October

AT&T is planning to launch a new iPhone during the third or fourth week of September, claims a source with the US carrier. The person remarks that the company is maintaining an all-hands-on-deck schedule for its workers during that time period, one that will extend all the way into mid-October. A second source adds that a large training event for regional workers has in fact been rescheduled from the first week of October as a result of a conflict with a "huge announcement."

The information could support widespread reports that Apple is planning a September 12th press event. With recent product launches, Apple has taken to releasing a product within a week or two after an announcement. The need to keep a full work crew in place at AT&T is presumably linked to demand, since during iPhone launches the carrier not only has to deal with online and retail orders but a flood of activation and troubleshooting requests.
