Vendors prep for impending iPhone update

Two major third-party US retailers, Best Buy and Target, have instituted new price cuts for the iPhone, notes AllThingsD. Target is now selling 16GB AT&T and Verizon models of the iPhone 4S for $179 on contract. Best Buy, meanwhile, has cut the price for the 8GB iPhone 4 for both carriers to just $50.

The discounts come on top of earlier ones from the two retailers, as well as other parties such as Sprint, which is selling a 16GB iPhone 4S for $149. Even Apple has started pricematching at its retail stores. Everyone is believed to be trying to clear out old stock in advance of a sixth-generation iPhone, which could be announced as soon as September 12th.
