LG IPS7 bezel thicker than 'almost invisible' 1.2mm claim

Video blogger claims misleading LG marketing

A video blogger has alleged that LG's recently released IPS7-series monitors have thicker bezels than first believed. Sebastian Schneider of YouTube channel Tech Century discovered soon after buying the IPS237 monitor that it had a hidden 10mm (0.4-inch) internal bezel under the glass, making a total bezel width of 11mm instead of the 1.2mm (0.025-inch) as claimed by the company.

The "almost invisible bezel" claim from LG was one of a number of reasons why Schneider bought the monitor, as part of a dual-monitor configuration that would have had very little gap between the display panels, but he immediately noticed a disparity after powering the screen up for the first time. After noting that a doctored image of the monitor used on the box did not show what the screen was capable of displaying, he made a video blog post warning others about the issue, and got a refund on the screen from his supplier.

A line from the initial press release supplied by the company claims that by incorporating LG's Cinema Screen design, it "results in an impressively thin 1.2mm bezel, practically eliminating any visual distraction." Many technology blogs covering the story, including ourselves, talked about the bezel being extremely thin. A search for marketing materials relating to the monitor turns up with some images showing the more-believable thicker bezel, while others seem to be edited to make the image fit the entire frame to the visible outer bezel. Some international variants of LG's website show both kinds of bezel on the same product page, and even some YouTube video clips from the company show the super-slim version.

Claims of a thin outer bezel without mention of the inner measurement, along with the misleading marketing images, are viewed as false advertising. Many products utilize a glass facade that reaches well beyond the edge of the presented picture and the display panel, however bezel measurements typically provide a relatively close approximation of the distance between the picture and the outer edge of the housing.

LG has been contacted for comment and a clarification on the 1.2mm claimed bezel. [via Reddit]
