TomTom iOS app updates with Foursquare, Bluetooth hooks

updated 03:07 pm EDT, Tue August 21, 2012

Tweaks route, destination selection options

TomTom has updated its iOS navigation app, available for a number of different regions, to v1.11. Several improvements have been made, such as Foursquare integration, which lets users find places to go via the service with or without logging in; after logging in, though, the app also lets users check in at a location. Another upgrade is Bluetooth A2DP support, which lets users stream audio to any paired speaker nearby.

Other changes concentrate mostly on interface conveniences. When trying to select an address from Contacts, for example, the app no longer requires a person to agree to share information; TomTom says in fact that the app never shared contact details. Destinations can also be copied and pasted into the app, and users can set up multiple route types for quick recalculations.

The main menu and location selectors can now be reorganized, and in the iPad interface, a toggle can be used to ensure that the menu will only close after double-tapping outside of it. Previously, missing a button could close the menu accidentally.

The TomTom apps run on any GPS-enabled iOS device with iOS 4.0 or later. Pricing varies based on the included map data.

TomTom would delight a lot of users if they'd adapt that Bluetooth A2DP protocol to send GPS location data to an iPad that lacks GPS. It'd let users put their iPhone next to the windshield, while using the much larger screen of an iPad to navigate from the passenger seat. And there are a lot of iPads without GPS.
