Researchers from Kaspersky Lab have released a description of a new malware delivery platform capable of spreading itself and its payload to Windows, Mac OS X, VMWare virtual machines, and Windows Mobile devices. The "Crisis" trojan is capable of intercepting emails and instant messages, with a module to keep track of websites visited by the infected computer.
Los Angeles-based audio purveyor Audyssey has unveiled the Audyssey Wireless Speakers, the company's second foray into Bluetooth stereo audio. The seven-pound speaker set is capable of 106 dB SPL peak at one meter.
An alleged iPad thief is attempting to rely on a unique defense, claiming a victim illegally trespassed on his property after utilizing the Find My iPad security service. The iPad's rightful owner used GPS coordinates to locate the device on the property of Canberra, Australia resident Alden Harder, who has been ordered by the court to provide fingerprints. Harder's attorneys are fighting the order, however, by arguing that the subsequent search warrant was based on unlawfully obtained evidence.
The New Zealand high court has ruled that the the United States must hand over all evidence in its case against Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom before any extradition can take place. The decision shut down the US Department of Justice's appeal of a lower New Zealand's court decision earlier in the year blocking the extradition pending case information.
Electronics retailer Best Buy has suspended profit forecasts and share buyback programs for the remainder of calendar year 2012 -- to give its CEO time to build a turnaround plan for the beleaguered company. The move comes just days after the naming of a new CEO and weak quarterly earnings caused by continued financial challenges in markets Best Buy serves.
The next iteration of Sony's PlayStation gaming and media console may support the "ultra-definition" resolution known as 4K. This according to an unnamed source, who tells BGR that the feature would figure into a larger push on Sony's part to sell the 4K spec to the wider public. The technology isn't yet priced to be competitive in the consumer electronics sector, and indeed the PlayStation 4 has yet to be announced, but the rumor does conform to Sony's previous actions in popularizing a technology.
Following on the heels of several alleged iPhone leaks, several photos published by Chinese site Sina are claimed to show the logic board for Apple's next-generation smartphone. The slightly blurry images appear to be taken before the board has made its way through the manufacturing process, lacking shielding but without providing visual confirmation of the chosen processor.
In a 5-0 vote, The Federal Trade Commission has voted to close the investigation of Facebook's acquisition of Instagram. The FTC has chosen to do nothing to block or otherwise hinder the merger, but reserves the right to "take such further action as the public interest may require." Mark Zuckerberg claims that Instagram will still share content out to non-Facebook sites, and it would still be possible to add and share with friends who aren't connected even after the merger.
Microsoft will be adding information from social questioning site Quora into the results for its Bing search engine. The new addition was announced today in a post from the Bing Team. The addition of Quora marks another step in Microsoft's continuing effort to grow market share for its search engine, which so remains in the shadow of market leader Google.
HP, the world's largest traditional PC maker, reported its second quarter financials today, revealing that the computer manufacturer suffered a loss to the tune of $8.9 billion last quarter. The computer maker's massive loss derived largely from a massive write-down stemming from the purchase of Electronic Data Systems. Despite the quarterly loss, observers believe the company is showing progress in its ongoing effort to transition to an enterprise services focus.
Eastman Kodak is scheduled to appear before federal bankruptcy Judge Allan Gropper on August 30. Kodak is in the middle of an digital imaging patent portfolio auction to attempt to raise billions of dollars to pay back the lenders that supported it through its Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The August 30 hearing date suggests that Kodak expects to have the auction process wrapped up by August 23, as according to judicial instruction, the company has to give at least seven days notice of an auction conclusion hearing.
The BBC reports that LG has revealed what it calls the world's largest ultra-definition television, a massive 84-inch screen that outputs at four times the resolution of a 1080p display. The 4K resolution featured on the new television is still in its infancy, but LG regards the technology as the future of the medium and is investing accordingly.
Facebook on Wednesday detailed that it's changing its Messages feature with a new interface. Called Web Messenger, the two-pane layout will show the name of the person a user is conversing with on the left along with the expanded conversation on the right. Newly added in the thread is support for multiple photos and keyboard shortcuts for the first time.
Adobe has launched Connect Mobile 2.0, an update of the iOS and Android clients for users of the company's Connect conferencing service. Hosts can now draw on whiteboards with their fingers, change layouts, and use emoticons. A new set of administration tools allows full control of recordings, audio conferencing, and video.
Data has been sent over a pair of undersea fiber optic cables between China and Taiwan. Traffic between the two countries flowed through the cables for four minutes as part of a completion ceremony, with some commentators suggesting the first data connection between the two countries as having some political significance.
HTC's One V handset is due to arrive at Cricket on September 2. As the smallest member of the One range, the phone will be the first HTC phone available at Cricket and also the first to bring Android 4.0 to its customers. The phone will cost $270 and not require any form of contract.
This fall, when Windows 8 launches, customers installing the new operating system will find that they do not have a 30-day grace period like they had with previous versions of Windows. The Kinect motion-sensing accessory for the Xbox 360 has received a $40 price drop in the US, with prices now set at $110. Other markets are due to get a similar though unspecified price drop as well, including North America, Latin America, Asia, and Pacific regions. Australians and New Zealanders won't get a price drop until October 4, however.
Archos today unveiled its new Gen10 XS tablet line. The line consists of three slim Android tablets, all of which will ship running an unskinned version of Android 4.0. Devices in the Gen10 SX line will sport a novel form factor integrating a keyboard that also serves as a cover, dock, and stand for the tablet.
Google has added a function that saves settings for its search engine. Preferences set for Google Search will be saved to the Google account, which in turn will automatically configure search on other browsers and web-enabled devices using the same account. Separate options for desktop and mobile search will allow for different configurations for each, all of which can be adjusted by selecting the cog symbol at the top of search results pages after logging in.
Telenav is giving website developers a new option to quickly navigate to places such as businesses and restaurants. It is providing a way to link from a site to its free HTML5-based navigation service through a dedicated button. This is called the Scout Drive Button and was already available for iOS devices.
Retailers are reporting shortages of stock on 27-inch iMac models ahead of a rumored mid-September press event supposedly revolving around next iPhone model. Sources familiar with the matter tell Bloomberg that Verizon is planning to carry a new Nokia phone running Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 operating system later this year. The new phone will mark the first time since the middle of last year that Verizon has released a Windows Phone device. For Nokia, having a major handset appear on Verizon will be yet another step in the Finnish handset maker's efforts to ameliorate its sluggish sales and claw back share in a market dominated by Apple's iOS and Google's Android.
China Telecom added 8.35 million subscribers during its second quarter, something attributed to launching the iPhone 4S in March, Bloomberg reports. Net income dropped 10 percent year-over-year from 5.05 billion yuan to 4.55 billion yuan, or $716 million. The figure did however exceed a 4.4 billion yuan median between seven analysts; Telecom says the iPhone should improve long-term growth while putting "short-term pressure" on profit margins, since it is paying high subsidies for each iPhone upfront instead of over the course of a contract.
Spotify is set to expand its streaming service to Canada, along with plans to open up in Asia and South America. Recently published annual accounts found by the Wall Street Journal included a management report dated April 23, detailing that the expansion into the Canadian market was always planned while hinting at moves in other continents, although not mentioning which specific countries.
AT&T has posted an official response to complaints about the carrier's new FaceTime policy, which restricts 3G use of the app to people with a Mobile Share plan. Wi-Fi use is still unhindered. "The FCC’s net neutrality rules do not regulate the availability to customers of applications that are preloaded on phones," an AT&T blogger claims.
Amazon has added a new tier to its cloud services. Amazon Glacier is being marketed as cloud-based backup storage for enterprise with considerably lower storage costs than the similar Simple Storage Service, however it lacks the immediate file retrieval found in S3. Instead, a job submission for files must be submitted and can take hours to process, as well as suffer a charge for backup retrieval.
Logitech has unveiled its Washable Keyboard K310 that comes with a standard keyboard layout, F-keys and a number pad. A rare iPhone 4 has surfaced on eBay replete with an unusual deathstar-like 'protologo.' According to the description, it is features an unusual back that clamps to the body without screws, as was fitted to the final shipping model. Further, it is also still fully functional and runs Apple's 'SwitchBoard' software testing suite and is designated the N90AP.
Wireless provider T-Mobile has announced an industry-first nationwide unlimited "4G" data plan for the United States. The new plan commences September 5, and can be added to an existing package for as low as $20. T-Mobile claims there are no caps or speed throttling with the new plan.

Confirming recent rumors, Nikon has officially unveiled its first Android-based point-and-shoot, the S800c, which pairs camera functionality with smartphone features, sans calling capabilities. The Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating system provides full support for Google Play apps, while enabling users to take advantage of Wi-Fi connectivity for image sharing and GPS for location tagging.
Google's Chrome team has developed and released a new set of JavaScript benchmarks. Titled Octane, the new suite "aims to measure a browser’s performance when running the complex and demanding web applications that users interact with daily." The new test group keeps the previous eight tests in the V8 suite, and adds five more, allowing for a better translation of real-world JavaScript performance to metered testing data.
