New handset may be unveiled in Berlin

Images of the as-yet-unannounced HTC Proto have leaked to the Internet, along with some details on the device's specifications. Among the published info are images of the device's chassis, which appears to represent a departure from HTC's current One line of smartphones. Some observers expect that the handset will debut some time next week at IFA in Berlin, though specifics on an unveiling are uncertain.

The photos, originally acquired by The Verge, show a matte black handset with capacitive Android navigation buttons and, apparently, no space for a front-facing camera. The rear view shows a slot that appears about the size of a microUSB slot. The device also bears Beats Audio branding, which seems to indicate that HTC is, at least for a while longer, still collaborating with the audio equipment maker in the wake of Beats buying back shares from HTC recently.

Observers expect that the Proto will be similar to the One V with regard to specifications. The device is thought to sport a 4-inch WVGA display, 5MP camera, and a 1GHz, dual-core Snapdragon processor. The phone is said to measure in at 9.62mm in thickness.
