Samsung pushes square, transparent displays for business use

Clear case uses transparent front for product overlays

Samsung is attempting to make more headway in the business display market with two new displays. One is a square screen designed to be used in complex video walls, while the other is a transparent display in the front of a case, with the aim of adding marketing-related visuals, such as specifications or pricing, to items seen inside the case.

The UD22B square display measuring 21.6 inches with a tiny 5.5mm bezel is designed for custom video walls, where a collection of up to 100 screens can form a non-standard mosaic, such as in a diagonal "step" formation, as well as the standard rectangular configuration seen elsewhere. The Direct LED backlight technology used by the display is also claimed to reduce power consumption by more than 30 percent compared to existing video wall solutions.

As an "all-in-one showcase," the NL22B resembles a fish tank in its construction, by having glass on most sides excluding the back and base. The front glass is actually a 22-inch transparent LCD panel, which has a transmittance rate of 15 percent compared to 5 percent rates seen elsewhere, allowing whatever is placed inside the case to be easily viewed. A built-in computer powers the display's visuals and speaker system, while an LED bar inside provides light for both the product inside and the display itself. Samsung has experimented with transparent LCDs before, and created a 46-inch prototype TV where the panel doubled as a solar cell to provide power.

Pricing details for both units are currently unknown, although it has been confirmed the UD22B will go on sale in September. [via Samsung Tomorrow]

The product display from the news article. I'm not sure why we don't import the pictures on stories.

The front pane is the transparent LCD. Make it touch-sensitive, and anyone could call up product info by touching the case right above a product. Cool.
