LG Optimus G stakes claim for smartphone crown

LG has made its latest Android flagship smartphone, the Optimus G, official. The Optimus G is the new leading Android smartphone on the market based on its specifications alone and is possibly the most advanced smartphone yet made. It’s 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro (APQ8064) with ‘Krait’ architecture is very similar to the Cortex-A15 architecture, but with performance that blows away the quad-core Exynos 4112 based on the older Cortex-A9 architecture used in the international version of the Samsung Galaxy S III.

LG has paired the S4 Pro processor with 2GB of RAM the Optimus G will sport a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front camera. It is also packing a high-capacity 2100MHz battery in a chassis measuring just 8mm thick. LG has managed to do this by applying the in-cell touch screen technology that is expected to also make an appearance on the next-generation iPhone, allowing for a phone with a thinner design. Storage is 32GB onboard only.

An additional advantage of the display, which is 4.7-inches and has a resolution of 1280x768 pixels with a 320ppi density, is that it consumes up to 70 percent less power than even an AMOLED display. Coupled with LTE capability, it should be one of the longer lasting 4G smartphones on the market. It is also incorporating new, but unspecified battery cell technology from LG Chem that boots its lifespan to 800 cycles at 80 percent capacity against 500 cycles lifespan of a typical smartphone battery.

The graphics capabilities are equally impressive. It features the latest Adreno 320 GPU that is over three times faster than the Adreno 225. In real terms, one of its capabilities includes a new ‘dual screen dual play’ function that allows for mirroring as well as the ability to display different content on the phone and on a screen simultaneously. Connectivty includes Bluetooth 4.0, MHL, NFC, DLNA, USB 2.0 HS, and A-GPS along with the requisite Wi-Fi 802.11n.

The LG Optimus G will launch in Korea next month with Android 4.0 ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ preloaded with a global rollout in the weeks and months following.
