Apple highest-positioned computer manufacturer

In Fortune magazine's annual list of the "100 Fastest Growing Companies," Apple has climbed 13 positions from its perch last year to the eighth position on 2012's list. The list is ranked by growth in revenue, profits, and stock price, and is a guide to "the most vibrant part of corporate America and beyond" according to Fortune.

In order, the top ten are silver sourcing company Silver Wheaton of Vancouver, BC; audio decoder chip manufacturer and Apple supplier Cirrus Logic from Austin, TX; search engine Baidu based in Beijing, China; oil refiners Hollyfrontier out of Dallax, TX; Pittsburgh, PA's real estate vendor HFF; athletic clothes supplier Lululemon Athletica based in Vancouver, BC; energy company Northern Oil & Gas headquartered in Wayzata, MN; Apple in eighth place; fiber laser developer IPG Photonics from Oxford, MA; and oilfield services company RPC in Atlanta, GA.

Fortune editors describe the list as containing "a passel of Apple suppliers (and Apple itself), a bevy of precious-metals and energy companies, and plenty of surprises." There are 21 non-US companies on the list, down two from last year. Canada leads the non-US list with nine companies, with China following at six.[via Fortune]
