Eric Schmidt highlights latest Android activation figures

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt has revealed that Android activations are now running at 1.3 million per day. It was only as recently as June that Android was running at 900,000 activations per day, while in December it was reported at a rate of 700,000 per day. Schmidt also added that there are now 500 million devices running Android in the wild.

Although Android activations appear to have doubled in the last eight months, Google has not been able to specifiy what the breakdown of new activations on new devices that the figures represent against the numbers of reinstalls of the OS. The figure also does not break down the wide range of devices running the Android OS outside of smartphones and tablets, including smart watches, MP3 players and cameras, for example. Despite this, the figure is representative of the continuing and rapid growth of Google’s mobile operating system.

The latest data from comScore shows that of 30,000 subscribers surveyed in the US, Android continues to lead the smartphone market with a 52.2 percent market share, although Apple also continued to grow its share to 33.4 percent. Samsung leads US smartphone and non-smartphone sales with a 25.6 percent market share, while Apple, which only sells smartphones, came in third behind LG with a 16.3 percent share.
