Apple may kill iPhone 3GS, introduce 8GB iPhone 4S

Would maintain cycle scheme used in 2011

Apple is planning to axe the iPhone 3GS, and make the iPhone 4 the company's entry-level smartphone, retail sources tell The Telegraph. It's expected that the phone will probably be given away free on contract. The sources add that an 8GB version of the iPhone 4S could be launched, and that the iPhone 5 will come in three different storage capacities like its predecessor, shipping on the week of September 21st.

The arrangement would continue Apple's existing tiered iPhone strategy. Until it began keeping older iPhones on sale, a long-running criticism from analysts was the lack of a model the average person could afford. Apple still faces some complaints that the cheaper phones it does offer are just older products, bound to go obsolete faster and miss out on feature advancements.

That's like saying; "Boo-hoo...the only Porsche I can afford is a used one." Instead of saying "YIPPIE, the dealer finally has a Porsche in my price range!" I use a 3GS on a daily basis and only occasionally lament my current lack of a 4S. I still think the 3GS is generally speedy and sexy (like the aforementioned older Porsche) and am thankful to have it (the phone, not the Porsche...still just dreaming there). Seems you just can't please 'em all.

I wouldn't recommend any of the new stuff anyhow, whether a car or a phone.... Expect the new iPhone 5 to have location-based video disabling (don't act shocked)... or if a car, new government blackbox mandatory with all new vehicles starting real soon. Times are looking more like a cage. Boycott new technology!!

The concept of "affordability" is a total crock. A 64GB iPhone 4s costs $.55 (fifty five cents) a day over the life of the contract. A 16GB device works out to $.27 - if the initial out of pocket cost is that much of an issue for some, perhaps those people need to really think hard about how much they actually need a smartphone more than a basic voice device on a pre-pay plan.
