CloudMobile A800 to be revealed on Friday

Acer announced today that it will be releasing a new smartphone powered by Alibaba's Aliyun operating system. As The Wall Street Journal reports, the Taiwanese manufacturer will be rolling out the CloudMobile A800 smartphone to the Chinese market on Friday. The model will be Acer's highest-priced model on sale in China, and Alibaba hopes it will spur greater adoption of its cloud-based mobile operating system among other manufacturers.

When it's released on Friday, Acer's CloudMobile A800 will retail for around $473. Customers purchasing the phone through Acer's online store on Alibaba's Tmall shopping site will receive a special promotional deal, though Acer has not given details on the deal.

Details on the device's specifications are scant as well. Some reports have the A800 sporting a dual core 1.5GHz processor, Qualcomm MSM8260A Snapdragon chipset, and a 1280x720 display, as well as 1GB RAM. Models of the handset released outside of China are expected to run Android 4.0.

Acer says that it will release another Aliyun-powered handset next month, and several other models next year.

For Acer, the new phone represents an opportunity to gain market share in a field dominated by Samsung, Apple, and others. For Alibaba, the A800 will allow the company to demonstrate its cloud-based operating system to other manufacturers, who the company says have expressed interest in Aliyun as a possible alternative to Google's Android. Alibaba has previously stated that it will be pumping as much as $158 million per year into the development of Aliyun.
