Original report still accurate, device not available at retail

Previous reports suggesting that wireless carrier Sprint won't be carrying the iPhone 4 are partially correct -- the now "free after contract" phone won't be available from Sprint at retail, and will only be purchasable online. A Sprint spokesperson told CNet that the "iPhone 4 will become a web-only device effective on September 21. We will certainly still be selling it." The original report showed that the older device would be "removed from Planogram on 9/21/12."

The iPhone 4 takes the place of the iPhone 3GS as a device available for free with the acceptance of a two-year contract. Originally, the iPhone and Apple came under fire for not having a cheaper or free option to consumers on a budget. MacNN has contacted AT&T and was told that corporate stores would carry the iPhone 4, but franchise stores would be left to their own discretion on whether or not to stock the device.
