Unlocked handsets to get update early

An upgrade to the latest version of Google's Android operating system, version 4.1, will be rolling out to some HTC One X handsets as early as next month. MoDaCo reports that HTC will release the update for unlocked One X handsets in October, while owners of carrier-branded handsets will have to wait for carrier approval. The updates are expected to be completed before Christmas.

Just last month, the One X received an upgrade to Android 4.0.4. The move to version 4.1 will see the operating system functioning at 60fps, leading to smoother animations. It will also add Google Now, Google's nascent personal assistant feature.

HTC had confirmed the 4.1 upgrade earlier this year, though it did not provide a firm timetable when doing so. The One XL and One S are also slated to receive an upgrade to version 4.1.
